Andhra Pradesh Introduces New Excise Policy: Liquor Prices Slashed, Big Changes Announced

The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a new excise policy, setting liquor prices at ₹99 for 180 ml, and adopting a private retail system for liquor sales. Major decisions include 33% reservation for backward classes in legislative bodies, establishing an AI university, and renaming Bhogapuram Airport.

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has rolled out its latest excise policy, which will come into effect from October 1. This new policy is set to impact the liquor industry significantly, with affordable liquor now priced at ₹99 for 180 ml, making it more accessible to the general population. This change is part of the government’s larger initiative to streamline liquor sales across the state.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who led the cabinet meeting, approved the adoption of a private retail system for the sale of liquor. Under this system, the allocation of licenses will take place through an online lottery process. This method aims to ensure transparency and fairness, allowing multiple businesses to compete for retail rights.

Additionally, the Information & Public Relations Minister, K. Parthasarathy, revealed that out of the 3,736 retail outlets in Andhra Pradesh, 10% will be reserved for the toddy-tappers community. The state government has also planned to set up premium liquor outlets at 12 strategic locations outside Tirupati to cater to high-end consumers.

In line with the state's focus on making quality alcohol available at reasonable prices, Naidu directed officials to ensure that the liquor provided meets the highest standards. This, combined with the transparent license allotment process, is expected to bring a new level of integrity to the liquor trade in Andhra Pradesh.

In another key decision, the cabinet approved a proposal to grant 33% reservation for backward classes in legislative bodies. This move highlights the state’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and creating opportunities for underrepresented communities in political spheres.

Moreover, the cabinet resolved to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) university and a skilling academy, aimed at enhancing educational and employment opportunities in emerging fields like AI and technology. This decision is expected to strengthen the state’s position as a hub for technological innovation and skill development.

In another significant announcement, the state government has approved the renaming of Bhogapuram Airport to Alluri Seetharamaraju International Airport, in honour of the legendary freedom fighter. This renaming reflects the state’s effort to recognize and celebrate its cultural heritage.

Additionally, the vision document titled “Vikasitha Andhra 2047” has been renamed as the “Swarnandhra Vision Document.” This document will outline the state’s strategic goals and will be released on November 1, outlining the development plans for the future of Andhra Pradesh.

Furthermore, the cabinet has given the green light to the continuation of the existing agency responsible for constructing the diaphragm wall of the Polavaram Project. New works related to the project will be carried out transparently, ensuring accountability in one of the state’s largest ongoing infrastructure projects.
